ATV Engine - A Quick and Basic Guide

ATV Engine - A Quick and Basic Guide
By Christina Gruble

An ATV is a four-wheeled automobile that has an ATV engine big enough to ride it like a normal motorcycle. ATVs are normally ridden odd road and it has features that can withstand terrains with sand, rocks, mud and dirt. Way back before, ATVs were initially used in the agriculture industry because it is good enough to take on rough tracks. Today, ATVs are ridden by adventurous individuals who are looking for action. Since ATVs are most often used in uneven terrains, it is used for outdoor recreational activities. It is also used professionally by some who do extreme sports such as racing, aerial stunts and maneuvers.

ATVs come in different shades of colors, kinds and styles. There are two kinds: sport vehicle and utility vehicle. You can also choose from a 4x4 wheel drive and 2x4 wheel drives. Atv engine can range anywhere from 250cc to 450 cc. For those who use their ATVs for extreme sports, they usually carry 500 cc to 700 cc engines. They also add accessories such as sports tires, shocks and they customize their engines so their ATVs will be able to speed up higher than the usual and jump heights extremely. Shock absorbers are also added so that the ATV will be able to resist extreme and intense impacts.

Mini ATVs is also another type of ATV but this one is a smaller version and is specifically designed for children. There are different sizes of Mini Quad ATVs for children, these are:

o 50 cc- This type of ATV Mini is recommended for children whose age range from 6 to 12 years old since this type is the smallest and slowest ATV out of the bunch.

o 90cc- This type of Quad ATV Mini is recommended for children and teens whose age range from 12 to 16 years old. This has a medium-sized engine and it speeds up to a moderate speed.

o Above 90cc- This type of Mini Quad ATV is recommended for teens whose more than 16 years of age. This has the largest engine out of all the Mini Quad ATVs and can accelerate at a much higher speed. This type is also used by teens that have more experience when it comes to driving ATVs.

All of these Quad ATVs Mini include additional features that are used as a safety precaution for its children and teenager riders. All of these Quad ATVs Mini have remote controls that can regulate the speed. These Mini Quad ATVs also has emergency off switches. Like any regular ATVs, they also have head lamps, brakes, signal lights and rear lights. Additional accessories like helmets and other safety gears are also recommended since kids and teens usually use this type of ATV.

Although these Quad ATVs Mini have ATV engine that are smaller than the usual ATV, parents should still keep a mindful eye when their children are riding it to prevent injuries and accidents.

Tips About the Best ATV Trails

Tips About the Best ATV Trails

Tips About the Best ATV Trails
By Becky E Day

The next time you hear about a great riding place, you might want to ask a number of questions before you decide to pack up to go ride there. Although all ATV's are intended just for fun, they aren't all set up for having fun on the same terrain, and a trail that would be ideal for many people may very well be a total bore or be impassable for other people.

Twenty years ago most ATV's were relatively similar. 3 wheels were a lot more common than 4, and they all had a utilitarian feel to them. Nowadays there is a huge variety of them which are specifically designed to meet the needs of nearly any rider. A large number of ATV's have become quite specialized and are manufactured for mud, rocks, work, or just plain speed. Nevertheless, due to the fact they are so specialized, specific trails are considerably more suited to various kinds of ATV's. ATV's fall under two categories, sport and utility, and each type performs very well in specific conditions.

With regard to rock crawling and various other exceptionally rough terrain, a huge 4 wheel drive utility quad is the best, but skid plates are strongly suggested. Four wheel drive is vital for rock crawls since it's not uncommon to get a front or back wheel off the ground in order to get from one rock to another. Even though it is possible to prod a 2 wheel drive sport bike over some crazy rocks, you'd best choose the right line through the rocks the first time since the majority of sport bikes don't have a reverse. The suspension setups in sport bikes in addition, make them a good deal more difficult to get across big rocks; this happens because the suspension is noticeably more rigid, and quite a few lack independent suspension. In quite a few utility quads, it seems like the tires reach down and grab the rocks.

With regards to mud pits, the utility quads, especially those with four wheel drive are right at home. The extra weight of these monsters, together with locking differentials, let the tires sling anything out of the way that it can't grab onto. Sport bikes can be lots of fun in the mud, however they are not the very first choice for deep mud holes. Anytime you are crossing mud, speed is your buddy, especially if you are on a sport bike designed for speed and acceleration, not the low end torque need to thrust through a wall of mud and water. However, stopping any quad in the middle of a mud pit, four wheel drive or otherwise, can mean getting out the tow cable or winch.

Another unexpected trail obstacle that can mean trouble is sand, especially the type of sand that is found in close proximity to creek beds. Commonly you can get some decent traction on sand hills, but unpacked sand is a problem for many quads, unless handled properly. In loose sand, a sport bike has the advantage over heavy utility quad. A sport bike's light weight allows it to keep moving over sand, while most utility bikes are designed to dig further into terrain to get traction. Regardless of the kind of quad you possess, speed is the best way to overcome sand without getting stuck.

The biggest issue that comes up anytime talking about great riding trails is what makes that trail great. Some people will state that primarily level trails with a few hills and ditches are terrific riding; they just wish to get away from everything and take pleasure in the great outdoors for a couple of hours. Even though there are many people that enjoy this type of ATV ride, it just won't cut it if you"re in the mood to sling some mud, catch some air, or crawl up hills. Regardless of what sort of riding you enjoy, you may be completely disappointed in the event that you unload at a area and discover that the terrain brings out your quad's weaknesses rather than its strengths.

How to Spot a Good Used ATV

How to Spot a Good Used ATV

How to Spot a Good Used ATV
By Kenneth Placencia Ragpala

ATVs or All Terrain Vehicles are definitely a hit among men, and even among women and kids. How could they be not? Not only are they suited for various purposes, such as leisure or some sort of rugged transportation, they are also efficient in giving you that exciting and comfortable ride that no other vehicle can give.

If you are thinking of owning one, then go for it. But before you do cash out and hop on to one,you better know how to check which ATV is the best for you and your money.

With a real tight economy these days, it is quite a logical move that you settle with a previously owned ATV. There's nothing wrong with buying a reconditioned quad bike. Little tweaks here and there could spell a lifetime of all terrain riding. You just have to know how to spot a good ATV inside and out.

Heres a rundown of tips you should follow to get quality products from the pool of used ATVs:

Check the whole bike for rusts. Sweep the vehicle with your eyes for those red things, especially on the shock mounts, intersections of framed components, the gas tank (inside and out), and the A-arm mounts. Rusts in these specific areas could men that the bike has been under severe amount of use. You might shell out a lot of money for repairs and repaint in the long run.

Check the wheels. Raise the ATV up and move the wheels in all directions. This will allow you to see if there are loose ball joints and worn-out wheel bearings.

Look for dirt and water in the air box. If it does contain them, it is best that you look for another ATV as presence of these two in the air box can potentially damage the ATV engine.

If you are looking at 4x4 ATVs, then you better check for the gear lube and CV joint boots. Chocolate brown gear lube and dilapidated joint boots are deal breakers. Unless you want to spend your cash for major repairs in the not so distant future, then look somewhere else.

Lastly, look out for the small yet important areas of the vehicle such as engine, brakes, engine oil, shutoff system, handle bars and the lights. These things better be functional if you are to buy the quad bike.

One more thing. You can command a more reasonable price if the parts functional yet old. Prices can be brought down to a more agreeable rate due to wear and tear.

Quad Bike ATV.Com offers great deals and prices for brand new and atvs for sale. The site also features reconditioned yet popular models of Used Honda ATV, Used Polaris ATV, Used Yamaha ATV, and more.

ATV Winching Tips and Setup Information

ATV Winching Tips and Setup Information
ATV Winching Tips and Setup Information
By Kim Hathaway
If you're serious about ATV camping, then an ATV winch is a necessary accessory. Every since I was little I have always tried to make my stuff better. Whether it was my bicycle, motorcycle, car, truck, or ATV, I had to modify it in some way to make it better, faster, more rugged and durable than stock. In doing this I then always had to test my creations to find its limitations and since most of my toys were for offroad that usually meant driving it until it wouldn't go any further or in other words, until it was stuck! Having done this several times in all types of situations I became very familiar with the advantages of having a winch. A winch is probably one of the most important accessories to have on your utility 4x4 ATV since a utility 4x4 ATV can take you to some very extreme places especially if you are ATV camping.
But having a winch does not guarantee to get you out of a stuck situation. You must also have the proper winch accessories, knowledge of proper winch usage and a couple of friends with cameras to ensure you make the best of a stuck situation. A good pair of gloves, recovery strap, snatch block, d-ring shackles, shovel, and a tree saver strap are just some of the winch accessories you will need to carry in your rack bags. I have put together a list of things I have learned over the years about proper winching techniques and accessories:
1. Make sure you have a good strong battery, preferably the largest ATV battery with the highest "Cold Cranking Amps" to provide the best initial pull of the winch.
2. Try to use as much winch cable or rope as possible because the more cable that is off the drum (always leave a least one layer of cable on the drum) the more pulling power the winch has. The use of a snatch block helps increase the pulling power of the winch. Remember whenever using a snatch block the speed of the pull is decreased while the pulling power is increased.
3. Whenever possible have the front tires pointed in the direction of the pull.
4. Never pull a heavy load with a winch for more than 1-1/2 minutes at a time. Allow the winch to cool between pulls and this also allows time for the battery to recharge.
5. Apply the throttle lightly to assist the battery during a pull.
6. During a pull, if possible the stuck ATV should be driven in the direction of the pull using moderate throttle until unstuck, at which time the winch cable or rope should be disconnected.
7. Whenever possible keep the winch cable or rope perpendicular to the drum of the winch during a pull and keep an eye on the drum to ensure the spooling of the cable or rope is even. Pulling at an angle causes the cable to spool unevenly which can lead to binding of the winch and damage to the gears.
8. In the event a pull must be done with the cable at an angle to the drum, turn the front tires in the direction of the pull and pull in small amounts and reposition the cable often to prevent uneven spooling.
9. When securing to a tree, always use a minimum 3" wide tree saver strap with D-Ring shackles. To prevent severe damage to a tree never wrap the winch cable or rope around a tree. Protect our environment!
10. When pulling the winch cable or rope out for a pull always inspect the line for kinks, frays, and worn areas. Always wear gloves when handling a winch cable.
11. When using the winch to pull out another ATV, secure the ATV with the winch to a tree or other object using the appropriate accessories before beginning the pull.
12. If stuck in deep snow or mud, dig out around the tires and if possible find some rocks and/or branches to stick under the tires for traction during the pull.
13. After a pull always try to re-spool the cable or rope even and tightly. Unravel the entire spool if necessary and draw the cable back in maintaining pressure on the cable to ensure a tight spool. This will help prevent a snarl in the cable on the spool.
14. Never exceed the strength limits of your winch and cable.
15. Never use a winch to tow another ATV, always use a tow or recovery strap rated for the load.

Mud Riding With Your ATV

Mud Riding With Your ATV

Mud Riding With Your ATV
By Chris Station

Mud riding may be one of the most challenging kinds of riding on an ATV, and it sure can be a lot of fun. Even so, there is more to mud riding than going out there and giving it lots of gas. Now you might think that mud riding doesn't require a lot of finesse, but there is a certain technique you have to use if you don't want to constantly just get mired down in mud.

Some kinds of ATVs are better for getting through deep mud than others. Speed is required although you don't want to hit a mud hole too quickly. If the mud hole isn't too extended you may just be able to give it lots of gas and hope that your momentum will slide you through. Where the hole is deeper or longer you can try to keep one tire on solid ground so your ATV can get some traction. Or if the mud hole is narrow enough, you can even try to straddle the rut or at least keep one side out of the mud at all times. But if the rut is too deep your quad may become unbalanced and dump over.

Some riders like to stand on the pegs when going into a mud hole so they can respond more quickly to the uneven terrain. The danger in this is that if your quad gets stuck in the mud abruptly, you may get tossed over the handlebars.

You will probably be more in control if you are balanced and comfortable. For some riders this might be standing, for others sitting or crouching just above the seat. Remember, you may hit tree roots or rocks that are hidden in that mud pit, or your quad may go from almost a complete standstill in the mud to suddenly getting traction while you have the throttle wide open. You want to be able to be in control in any situation.

An almost automatic reaction is to rev the motor once the quad starts to lose traction. When the mud is flying and you aren't getting traction, giving it more gas is usually not the best way to get going again. The more stuck you are the more this applies. Try twisting the throttle slowly to gradually add power so your wheels can get traction by gripping rather than by spinning faster. You can actually dig yourself in deeper if you spin your wheels too much, too quickly.

When you get into deep mud, try to shift your body to put extra weight where you are more likely to get some traction. For two wheel drive quads it works best to keep more weight on the back end as well as to shift your weight from side to side so at least one tire will be able to grab. As you might expect four wheel drive quads are a lot better in mud. Outfitting your ATV with tires with a deeper tread will also help when mud riding whether your quad has four wheel drive or just two wheel drive.

Of course to be able to do any mud riding you'll need to be able to transport your ATV to the trail or track. Check out this website at http://www.aluminumloadingramp.org to have a look at the best ATV loading ramps on the market.

Learn About 4x4 Mudding Today

Learn About 4x4 Mudding Today
Learn About 4x4 Mudding Today
By S W Allen
Just about everybody enjoys watching 44 mudding. Whether you are actually involved in the driving and getting stuck is a personal preference. Some people really love getting into their truck and running it through the mud.
Many times they will get stuck and require someone to pull them out, but that is all part of the fun. Builders make these mud running vehicles out of many different types of cars and trucks.
Usually the suspension will be enhanced so that it can withstand the beating as well as help the body of the car clear the mud. Additionally many times the engine will also be enhanced to create more power at lower speeds to help them get through the mud.
So what is the fascination of watching people drive through basically a mud puddle? It is the thrill of the run, the victory or defeat of various drivers and of course, the fun of getting stuck.
That does seem to be the most fun people have, when a truck gets stuck and others have to wad in to help pull them out. Everyone ends up covered in mud as the stranded vehicle is rescued. There are always those who are better at driving through than others. These are usually the favored drivers in any mud run. However, the object is to get the furthest into the mud before you can no longer go forward.
The person who makes it the furthest, or even all the way through, will be pronounced the winner. So, what do they win? Usually just bragging rights to the race. And the following week after everyone has performed the necessary repairs on their vehicles, they will all race again to try to beat the prior week's victor.
There are a few professional mud racing organizations that track wins and losses and so on, but most of the runs are held in someone's back yard where there is ample room and plenty of mud. Some people choose to create their own tracks by basically hosing down an area that is already sandy or just dirt or sometimes they will even use a backhoe or tractor to carve out an area then wet it down to create the mud.
Everything from custom built cars and trucks, ATVs and motorcycles run through these mud holes. Many times there will be various classes based on engine size, suspension and body style. Other times it will be all in one category and everyone races against each other. Still other times there is no actual competition. It is a group of people getting together for a day in the sun.
This type of entertainment can become very expensive for the drivers and builders. The suspension parts are usually what ends up getting broken and they are not inexpensive to fix. Because of this sometimes drivers will stop before they actually would have been forced to because they want to avoid the expensive repairs. Others will push their vehicle until it cannot go any more quite literally, causing extensive damage that will require many weeks to repair.

ATV Mud Bogging - The Joyful Ac

ATV Mud Bogging - The Joyful Act
ATV Mud Bogging - The Joyful Act
By S W Allen
ATV mud bogging is one of the most popular sports in the United States and the Canada. It is also known as the mud racing, muddying or mud drags. As this game is all about driving, the vehicle through the mud stretch and in the real senses a tough task to do. Here the winner is that person who drives the vehicle to the largest distance in the game. If some vehicles travel the entire length then in such case the time took to travel the lane is the point of consideration. Generally, these vehicles in the competition of the mud bogs are four-wheelers.
If one has to even imagine the thing of driving the vehicle on such a lane which is full of pit of mud then he/she would like to watch the same instead of participating in the game. Although the game is very enjoyable to watch but there are certain risks involved. Generally the organizer of such events make the possible arrangements related with the health, foods etc. For the participants as well as the audiences.
There are several bodies that look after this motor sports like the National Mud Racing Organization (NMRO) and the American Mud Racing Association (AMRA). These sport bodies looks after the development and maintenance of the mud track owners to offer the game some respectable inputs like good return to the sponsors and other relevant thing.they are also involve in the marketing of the game.
There are different rules to play the game. Generally the governing bodies and takes the responsibility for the implementation and for any kind of changes in it.These body also look for the benefits of the associated people either it is sponsor or the track owner or even the audience who has come to see the event should not feel it as a loss.
In the old times, the mud bogging was done by the pickup trucks or any sport utility vehicles (SUV) that is modified with the lifted suspensions and has bigger tires. The engines of the vehicles upgrade were also common at that time. During the 1970s and the early 1980s, the bigger tractor tires got much popularity and the driving lines required for such tires led to some of the first purposely built as mud bogging machines.
In late 1980s, governing bodies started giving the precedence to vehicles along with the lower and modified, dragster-type designs, as it increased the popularity of the same. At the same juncture, the superchargers became a widely used and led to the modern top-notch racer.
During the same time the mud bogging events were much popular and there used to be a class that was to run the tractor tired trucks. The trucks were like the Goldbricker, Arizona Outlaw, Arizona Sidewinder, Six Pack, Nasty Habits, Instant Motion, Mud Pup, Mud Lord, Wild Thing, and the Cyclops was mostly known in the field. Some trucks were later modified to be like a Monster Trucks.
There are many companies that are organizing this event at a very affordable price. Again these events depend a lot on the taste of residents of a city. If the local people are more enthusiastic about this game then the price of the tickets go up and if it is on the other side where there is very little audience for the same then the rate goes down to promote the game. The game bodies again play a big role here by helping the owner of the mud track to get a good return from any event organized about the mud bogging.
Talking about the tracks, there are many qualities and types of the same as it could be an open bog, bog with small rock, flat or progressive bog or might be a hill with holes. These bogs come in different shape and design that may range from 46 meters to 91 meters. In general an open bog is considered as a natural one general found near any forest area. The hill with holes normally ranges among 18 meters to 61 meters as it is a series of hill and holes. Similarly, the flat or the progressive tracks are like the drag strips or even filled with salt and all the tracks that come under the NMRO are generally flat.
In the last it could be implied that ATV mud bogging is a game to enjoy along with your friends and family. The mud bogging is a joyful act and it should be taken in the spirit of the game.

How to Convince Your Wife to Let You Buy an ATV

How to Convince Your Wife to Let You Buy an ATV

How to Convince Your Wife to Let You Buy an ATV
By Jared D Oldham

It's no secret that ATVs rock and just about every guy wants one. However getting your wife to see the vision is pretty difficult at times. Any good family discussion needs to focus on just that - "family". ATVs are a great way to spend time together as a family. ATVs are a link to dozens of great outdoor activities like camping, hunting, fishing, trail riding and afternoon spins. Below I will point out a few ways riding ATVs make these activities even better.

Camping is a great way to connect with the wilderness and an ATV is the perfect way you can do that as a family. You can jump on the quad together and spend the day cruising the trails talking and enjoying the wilderness. Hunting and fishing are both great ways to bond and discover new places. Your ATV will help you do this more efficiently.

Trail riding is one of our favorite ways to spend the weekend. After a few trips my wife is really starting to enjoy driving as well. Since she is new to the state it's been an awesome way to show her the surrounding wilderness. We chat and let the family dog join us by running behind.

Afternoon spins are one of the best ways to spend an afternoon with the kids after work, giving your wife a break from the kids. It's a win win for both of you. ATVs can also be a huge help in the yard. Our yard needs some serious help and my quad is really helping me handle the loads of work. I've never met a wife who doesn't want her husband to spend more time in the yard or playing with the kids. An ATV is a great way to do all of these things in a way that you will love as well.

Buy used: spending $8,000 dollars on your first quad is going to be a very tough sell. However finding the guy who is selling his quad after only riding it a few times is a great way to save money and get an awesome machine. Let the first owner take the depreciation drop.

Most importantly make sure it's not just going to be another way to leave your wife for the weekend with the guys. Teach her how to drive and make the types of trips that she will enjoy and save the hardcore rides for your trips with friends. I grew up riding my whole life and now it's becoming one if my wife's favorite things to do. The sell has been long but we will be riders for life.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Types of ATV Tires

Important Facts About the Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Types of ATV Tires
Important Facts About the Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Types of ATV Tires
By Adam D Worth
People often overlook important details about the maintenance of their automobile, thus most of the times decreasing its life span, and in some extreme cases, even putting lives in danger. Even though tampering with vehicles is not recommended (and also illegal in most countries), an owner still has an active role in deciding what parts can fully satisfy his needs.
When talking about vehicles, there are two elements that must be known and properly understood: services and parts. Generally, automotive services such as oil changes, wheel alignments or brake repairs are done by professional mechanics, in authorized services that can give guarantees of their quality work. However, this commodity is not a reason why people should not know how to perform a simple oil change when in need. Regarding oil changes (and most automotive services for that matter), most countries consider it mandatory that they are made at least on a yearly basis. The simple oil change is one of the actions that can prolong the time that the car can run well and can be necessary anywhere between three or twenty-four months, depending on the driver's habits and, of course, on the type of vehicle.
Even if a certain quality control is imposed for all services, things tend to change when talking about the automotive parts industry. Most of the times it happens with a poorly made mirror or headlight, but when important elements such as tires are not properly manufactured, the safety of the driver and passengers can no longer be ensured. This is even more relevant for ATV enthusiasts, who rely greatly on the quality of their tires.
Different models of ATV tires exist, and even if some of them are regarded as "the best for any terrain", in reality you must know what you need them for. The main choice is usually between comfort and resistance to tough terrain. When used on a daily basis, most manufacturers usually recommend less aggressive ATV tires, for more "enjoyable" rides; however, if used rarely and in extreme driving conditions, an 8 plies carcass tire will surely suit your needs a lot better. The same comfort factor is essential when choosing between radial and bias ATV tires. Of course, most distributors and manufacturers offer guidance in the decisive process, so you should always address any questions to the specialized staff.
No matter what you desire to invest in, always look for products with a quality guarantee because they will almost always prove to be reliable in the long run.
